What is F&O?

If you’re reading this page, chances are you’ve arrived on our blog and are wondering what on earth this clumsy acronym is! This is a short, back-to-basics guide for you.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (D365 F&O) is a comprehensive, cloud-based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution that brings together a range of business functions into a unified platform. Put even simpler, it’s software that you access through a web browser, that is designed to help businesses manage their finances, supply chain operations, human resources, and more, all in one place.

Primary Modules of D365 F&O

D365 F&O is composed of four licensable modules, each with its own features, but all accessible in one environment:

  1. Finance: This module includes specific functionalities for General Ledger, Budgeting, Cash and Bank Management, Fixed Assets, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable.
  2. Supply Chain Management: This module helps businesses streamline their supply chain operations, from procurement to inventory management.
  3. Commerce: This module helps businesses manage their e-commerce, in-store, and back-office operations.
  4. Human Resources: This module assists in managing the workforce, from recruitment to retirement.

Each module can be personalised to suit the specific needs of a business, providing flexibility and scalability as a business grows.

A Brief History of D365 F&O

D365 F&O was added to the cloud-based Dynamics 365 suite in a 2016 update, initially known briefly as Dynamics AX7 and then as Dynamics 365 for Operations. Prior to being cloud-based, the product was previously available as an on-premise product with versions called AX 2012, AX 2009, and before that Axapta. Many companies still operate on-premise versions of AX to this day.

Over the years, Microsoft has continued to enhance and expand the functionalities of D365 F&O, making it a robust and reliable solution for businesses of all sizes.
